Scalebound Still Won’t Die — and Hideki Kamiya Wants Xbox to Bring It Back

Scalebound was cancelled in 2017. Most cancelled games eventually fade into concept-art archaeology. Scalebound has instead spent nearly a decade refusing to leave the conversation — partly because Hideki Kamiya keeps talking about finishing it.

In a new VGC interview, the Clovers studio head said he still strongly wants to see the project through and stressed that he was “one hundred percent serious.” He also acknowledged that his studio is not necessarily in a position to do it right now.

Why this keeps coming back

The pitch was always catnip: a PlatinumGames-style action adventure where the player controls a human protagonist while fighting alongside a giant dragon. It was ambitious, mechanically unusual and publicly tied to Xbox at a time when Microsoft badly needed distinctive exclusives.

Scalebound has become more than a cancelled game. It is now a symbol of the version of Xbox people keep wondering whether Microsoft still wants to be.

Kamiya has form here

The reason fans take him seriously is Okami. For years, an Okami sequel looked like exactly the kind of wish-list project that would never escape interviews and social posts. Then it happened: Kamiya formed Clovers and Capcom announced a new Okami project.

That does not mean Scalebound is secretly in production. It means “never” is a weaker word around Kamiya than it used to be.

The Xbox question

Any revival would still require Microsoft, because Scalebound was an Xbox-published project. And the Xbox business has changed dramatically since 2017: leadership, hardware strategy, multiplatform publishing and the role of exclusives are all different.

Oddly, that could make a revival either less likely or more interesting. A modern Scalebound would not necessarily need to exist as a traditional “this sells Xbox consoles” exclusive.

Do not call it a comeback yet

There is no announcement. There is no confirmed deal. There is no release window. What we have is the original director publicly saying, again and very clearly, that he wants to finish the thing.

For most cancelled games that would be trivia. For the guy who just dragged Okami back from the dead, it is enough to keep one eyebrow raised.
